~ Chora of Folegandros ~

Chora Village Folegandros: The traditional setllement of Chora is located at an altitude of 200 meters above sea level. The nearest port – Karavostasi is also close by and is a mere 3.4 Kms away.


Chora is conspicuous by its meandering streets and alleyways. There are many squares which again are distinct trait of Folegandros and the Cyclades islands. The houses are whitewashed and rather well maintained.


In fact, Chora happens to be one of the oldest medieval towns in the whole of Cyclades. The edifices are all built close to one another, thereby making the exterior wall of the castle (Kastro). One must note that the Chora is out of bounds to motor vehicles, and has an exclusive "hub" of three squares.


There are plenty of shaded areas provided by the trees and one can truly unwind here. Chora is one of the most picturesque villages in the island of Folegandros. For those interested in short excursions, one can go up North to Chrissospilia, which is in close proximity to Chora. Here one can marvel at stalactite cave which is taken care of by the Archaeological Service.

ΚΑΣΤΡΟ
Η Χώρα, είναι η πρωτεύουσα της Φολεγάνδρου, ένας από τους καλύτερα διατηρημένους παραδοσιακούς οικισμούς των Κυκλάδων. Μολονότι τα ιστορικά στοιχεία για τη Χώρα είναι πενιχρά, γνωρίζουμε πως στις αρχές του 13ου αιώνα ο Βενετός Μάρκος Σανούδος (δούκας του «δουκάτου του Αιγαίου» με έδρα τη Νάξο) διέταξε το χτίσιμο του Κάστρου στο βορειοδυτικό άκρο του οροπεδίου.
Το Κάστρο είναι ο παλαιότερος οικισμός της Φολεγάνδρου, που δεν έπαυσε ποτέ ως και σήμερα να κατοικείται και αποτελεί ένα εντυπωσιακό αξιοθέατο του νησιού
Χτίστηκε με σκοπό να προστατεύει τους κατοίκους του νησιού από τις ληστρικές επιδρομές των πειρατών. Η βορεινή πλευρά του βρίσκεται εκτεθειμένη στο χείλος γκρεμού ύψους 210 μέτρων περίπου από την θάλασσα, αλλά προσφέρει μια θέα που σου κόβει την ανάσα. Τα σπίτια του, που είναι όλα κατοικημένα και σε εξαιρετική κατάσταση, φέρουν στις πλάτες τους μια ιστορία σχεδόν δέκα αιώνων.
Ο οικισμός αυτός έχει πλέον επίσημα χαρακτηριστεί παραδοσιακός οικισμός και προστατεύεται από την Εφορεία Βυζαντινών Αρχαιοτήτων της Εθνικής Αρχαιολογικής Υπηρεσίας.

CASTLE
Hora is the capital of Folegandros, one of the best preserved traditional settlements in Cyclades. Although historical data for the country is poor, we know that in the early 13th century Venetian Marco Sanudo (Duke of "Duchy of the Aegean based in Naxos) ordered the building of the castle in the northwest plateau.

The Castle is the oldest village of Folegandros, which has always inhabited, even now, is an impressive sight of the island. It was built to protect the inhabitants of the island from pirate raids. The north side is exposed on the edge of the cliff about 210 meters from the sea, but offers a view that is breathtaking. The houses of castle, which are inhabited and are in excellent condition, carry a history of almost ten centuries.

This settlement has now been officially declared traditional village and protected by the Byzantine Antiquities of the National Archaeological Service.
